Smart Marketing?

Absolutely, it was smart marketing for Old Milwaukee beer to partner once again with actor and comedian, Will Ferrell for a Superbowl commercial that aired exclusively in Nebraska on KNOP-TV. The deviously sharp minds behind the campaign knew that the video would go viral and have everyone watching and talking about it. Ferrell makes Old Milwaukee cool to all college frat boys...and girls for that matter!

Tebow Wants to Fox Trot?!

Lord have mercy! We may just get to see Tim Tebow strutting his stuff on the dance floor of "Dancing with the Stars." Only, it won't be this upcoming season--perhaps in a year instead. I don't know if I can wait that long to see the Jockey underwear model cha-cha-ing across the floor.

He has reportedly had a conversation with the reigning champion--J.R. Martinez and expressed a definite desire to do the show.

While Tebow has refused to drop his pants for the Jockey underwear endorsement, he might still be sporting some sweetly snug pants for "Dancing." Which as most of us women know--is equally as enjoyable as the tight football pants he sports on the field for the Denver Broncos.

I don't know about you, but if he were my dance partner, I'd be "accidentally" dropping things all day for him to pick up for me. Oh my!!

If You Died Would Anyone Notice?

How sad?! A guy here in Wisconsin--over by West Allis, took his own life four years ago and it wasn't until his home was foreclosed upon that a Realtor noticed his decomposing body.

This is the stuff that the crime scene investigation shows are made of, and quite frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if we see this story line appear in one of those programs. It's just so incredibly unfathomable that this could happen to someone.

Apparently, David Carter had recently split with his wife. She took the kids and left him. He was in a deep depression, had shed a tremendous amount of weight and quit his job--telling everyone that he was going to move to New Mexico. Except that's not what he did. Instead, he snuffed himself out with a gun. And no one realized what happened for four years, when his skeletal remains were found on the staircase inside the home, with a gun on his chest.

Gross. But a curious case of the psychology of people. Not so much what drove Mr. Carter to take his own life--as I think that's fairly obvious--but why no one seemed to follow up with him. In the aftermath of finding his remains, plenty of people were coming forward to state that he was such a "smart and generous" man. Yet, no one attempted to find him or check in on him. I'm no expert, but if a guy has his wife and children walk out on him, he is showing tremendous weight loss and says he's moving out of state--I'd like to think I'd talk to him to make sure he was OK or if he needed some help. Of course, hindsight is 20-20.

We all would like to think we'd be that person who cares enough to make a difference, but when it all comes down to it--are we more wrapped up in our own lives and tend to not "plug in" to anyone else's situation? I'm guilty of that...plenty. I believe in our "gut" we all know what to do if we're faced with this kind of situation. It's a matter of whether or not we respond to that nagging feeling that something is just not right with someone in our lives. Unfortunately, no one in David Carter's life did that. Sad for him. Sad for those who knew him and will have that guilt-monster creeping into their hearts for the rest of their lives. What do you think? Drop us an email.

More Winter?

Earlier this morning, shortly after six bells--Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow in Pennsylvania and spotted his shadow. That means six more weeks of winter...at least for the folks out on the east coast.

That's fine and dandy, but we're in Wisconsin. So, we wanted to rely upon Jimmy the Groundhog in Sun Prairie. (MUCH closer to home!) Well, Jimmy's whereabouts were a bit fuzzy, like his head. Apparently officials in Sun Prairie are saying the weather down there would prevent Jimmy from making an appearance. We're not sure what that means.

After further thought, we decided to have our own furry groundhog-like prognosticator, Bill Graul from Stormteam 8 step outside and see what HE could see. I mean, he's WAY closer to the Coulee Region anyway than Phil or Jimmy. This would be the prediction that would count!

Well, Groundhog Graul did NOT his shadow. So, that means an early spring! Sources indicate that snowmobile enthusiasts are starting the process for a recall.

Welfare Drug Testing

I've seen a lot of Facebook posts and Twitter "tweets" about this issue over the past several months and now there's a new twist in the "Welfare Drug Testing Bill" that has been working it's way through congress.

There are two sides to every story, but this one is quite salacious. On it's surface, the concept seems solid to me. If you are a recipient of government assistance, you must be subjected to a drug test. A drug test that you pay for out of your pocket. If you pass it--you are refunded your money for the test and your benefits from the government continue. If you fail it--you don't get benefits for a full year. Fail it again and you don't get benefits for three years.

I'm sorry if you're reading this and happen to be offended by this concept. I actually approve of it--despite many people squawking about it being unconstitutional. I've worked at many jobs that required me to be subjected to random drug tests. My "number" came up quite frequently, but I never balked at the pee cup. I just did it. I had nothing to hide. And more importantly, I valued my job.

I fail to understand how having to do a drug test is unconstitutional in this case. You receive money from the government--tax dollars that the rest of us pay from our income. Many of us who pay taxes take the same test which are mandated from our employer. Why should welfare recipients not be required to do the same? For some--the government pay check IS their job. (sole income) If it were private donations that welfare recipients were receiving, I'd feel a little different, but the funds are from taxpayer's hard earned dollars.

Ben Franklin had a great quote on this. "I am for doing good to the poor, but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in pverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves and became richer."

That makes perfect sense to me. But now here's where it gets interesting. Some lawmakers have amended the bill to also require legislators to be subjected to the same drug test. Bazinga! All of a sudden, the bill is being withdrawn. Seriously?! I don't know about you--but I have EVEN LESS confidence in our elected officials after hearing this.

When you think about it, the exorbitant paycheck that they draw, the benefits, the retirement that they all receive for "serving their constituents," is ALSO funded by our tax dollars. Again--I fail to see the problem with this amendment to the bill. If you're going to put your hand in the cookie jar, you should be willing to also put your neck on the line to continue to have the privilege to keep reaching into said cookie jar.

What's the Difference?!

The San Francisco 49er's tight end, Vernon Davis pulled off a 73-yard touchdown last night in the NFC Championship game against the New York Giants, then promptly jumped up on a cameraman's stand and struck a pose. Officials threw a penalty flag for "illegal celebration."

I was not alone, as Twitter was ON FIRE with people thinking the same thing as me. "How is THAT any different than a Lambeau Leap?!"

Commentator Joe Buck, took the time after the commercial break to explain to the viewers that the "Lambeau Leap" was "grandfathered in" and still allowed. Now while I was grateful that Joe Buck could finally share some pertinent information, let alone something that wasn't filled with an Eli Manning tongue bath, I found myself with a one-word response. "PFFFFT!!"

Seriously? Jumping up on a cameraman's perch is considered using a "prop," but dunking the football through the goalposts, as Davis did last week against the Saints was not using a prop. ??

I'm thoroughly confused. It's not like he kept the cameraman's stand hidden in the padding of the goal post, only to whip it out like Joe Horn of the Saints did with a cellphone to call his children after scoring a touchdown in 2003. (Granted, the move garnered a $30,000 fine--but it was still kind of cool.)

Why must the NFL (No Fun League, as it's been referred to lately) crush the spirit of celebration? It's bad enough you can barely hit the quarterback anymore without being penalized. Now you can't be creative when you score.

I blame this society where we want to give everyone a trophy, even if they didn't win, based solely on participation. Gag! There are winners and there are losers. Deal with it. As a Vikings fan--I'm more than familiar with this concept and have swallowed my pride more than I'd like to admit. But I would never deny a celebration after a touchdown.

Besides, if they're going to "grandfather in" things, such as the Lambeau Leap, couldn't they also grandfather in any defense bulldozing Tom Brady without penalty? I mean, who wouldn't enjoy watching that?!

Losing a Parent

It doesn't matter how old you get, it is never easy losing a parent. Blake Shelton just lost his Dad, Dick. According to The Boot, he had been battling health issues for quite some time. But even knowing someone close to you is in declining health doesn't make a loss any easier.

The two were quite close--going hunting together often. The photo above was one that Blake tweeted from one of their last hunting trips, when his Dad landed a big ol' buck.

Fortunately, Blake will have those memories to hold onto for the rest of his life. It all makes for a stark reminder to the rest of us to be sure we take the time to spend with people who mean a lot to us. You sure don't want to wake up someday and be wishing you could have done more or spent more time with that person. Regrets suck, plain and simple. You are the captain of your life ship. I know I'm guilty of not making enough time for my family. And I know I'll be making phone calls and plugging in family time ASAP.

Would You Rather...

Have you ever played that game with friends? We were tossing a few questions around the other day and it brought on some interesting conversation. So we'll ask you the questions.

Would you rather find true love or $1-million?

So, love or money basically. I'd opt for love, without a doubt. Money is swell, but it also causes problems. And if you're savvy enough, you could by rights save and invest enough over the years to garner a cool $1-million. Not that I have said skills to do so, but the potential is there for everyone with hard work and dedication. But regardless, I'd take love over money any day. It's what makes life worth living.

Would you rather be gossiped about or never talked about at all?

I'd take being gossiped about over never being talked about, because it happens enough in my life as it is and it really doesn't seem to phase me anyway. Got something negative to say about me? Great. I'm happy for you. The people who buy into your garbage don't matter and those who are smart enough to know you're full of malarkey will only think ill of you for spewing such things.

Would you rather give up movies or music?

This is such a tough one. I really enjoy movies...but I don't think I could survive without music. I like to write and be creative. I think I'd have "movies" going on in my head anyway. I would keep music. What a dull world it would be without it.

Would you rather fight Mike Tyson or talk like him for the rest of your life?

Ugh. I wouldn't want EITHER of these options. Mike Tyson would probably kill me. Unless he decides he shouldn't hit a woman, but I don't think his history has shown that's even a consideration for him. But TALK like him?! Egads! I would never be able to keep my job here at the radio stations! Although...I might be able to land some cartoon voice-over jobs with it. A little marketing and an agent working it for me and I might be able to find viable work with that cheese-@ss voice. So, I'd opt for the voice...begrudgingly. Honestly, that one is a no-win situation.

Why Do I Feel Bad?

I have no explanation for it, but I feel bad for you Packer fans. As a Viking fan, who has been the butt of jokes for quite some time now--I should be relishing in the fact that your defending Superbowl Champions won't have a shot at a repeat performance in the big show. But I don't. I actually feel your pain.

Now, certainly the pain is NO WHERE NEAR what you diehard fans are experiencing today. That should go without saying. And quite frankly, it bothers me that I can't get myself to rejoice over this turn of events. I mean--some of the Packer fans have been downright brutal to me over the past several seasons. But yet, here I am...feeling bad for the Packers and all of you.

Is it because I married a Packer fan? Maybe.

Could it be that I just have a kind heart? Doubtful.

Perhaps it's because I will miss the photo bombing by Aaron Rodgers on the team captain photos. That's actually very probable.

In reality, the more I think about it--I believe the reason I feel so bad for the Packers and their fans for this horrible loss is the fact that there won't be as many stories and photos of Aaron Rodgers or Clay Matthews each week. Yes--I admit it. It is probably hormonal why I feel bad for you guys. And I have no shame for that. ;)

Butchering

of the National Anthem

Apparently, Rosanne Barr was not available to do the National Anthem for the BCS Championship game last night. So, the powers that be, instead nabbed Anthony Lacuira--long lost Super Mario Brother--to "sing" our National Anthem. I use the term "sing" loosely.

I realize that this guy is an American operatic tenor, who according to Wikipedia (if they have it, it MUST be true, right?!) was "a boy soprano." Quite frankly, I would've believed he was not an American--given the horrible pronunciation of the lyrics of the National Anthem--let alone making up words for it.

Was he really the first choice for the BCS to sing?! I guess he's lucky he sang in New Orleans, because there is a law on the books in Indiana that could result in a monetary fine for incorrectly singing our National Anthem.

Regardless, the butchering set the tone for the game. It was a horrendous snoozefest. Add insult to injury when Brent Musburger failed to consistently allow any of us to play along with the drinking game named after him for his cheesy commentary and cliches. I was forced to dump my beverages down my gullet in disgust.

Add it all together and it equals an EPIC FAIL. But then again--isn't the whole process of determining who plays in this game exactly that anyway?! What do you think? Drop us an email.

Propaganda Machines

Buckle up baby...we're just getting started with the political rhetoric. My friend Bruce signed me up for the Obama campaign emails, just to bombard and annoy me with more of that type of stuff, back when we had our last presidential campaign. I never unsubscribed to them, as I found it interesting to read what the "spin" was coming from their camp.

Oddly enough, it's almost identical to the "spin" from the Republican camps.

It makes it all quite laughable, really. I'm always amused when talking to a staunch Democrat or Republican who actually believes that their "party" is so much better than the opposition.

Here's a quote from the latest Obama campaign email: "We'll be facing an onslaught of unprecedented spending from outside groups funded by corporations and anonymous donors. In Iowa alone, so-called "super PACs" spent $12.9 million on almost exclusively negative ads."

*gasp!*

That has NEVER happened in the Democratic party! Outside groups funded by corporations and anonymous donors?! Negative ads?! Say it isn't so! Bahahahaha! Do you see what I mean? It's ridiculous for one side to accuse the other of this because they ALL do it--quite consistently too, I might add.

But after reading this email, it got me to thinking... are there people out there who actually believe everything "their party" puts out there? Do people not think for themselves anymore? How frightening is that?!

Honestly, I don't care if you affiliate yourself with the donkeys or the elephants, as long as you don't swallow every line they put out there. Try to remember that you were given a brain and you should use it as much as possible to decide for yourself if what you're being told is indeed factual or just a bunch of spin. Unfortunately, nine times out of ten--it's just spin. That's how politics work.

I am registered as an Independent and I plan to remain that way. There's just too much drivel on both sides of the aisle to tie myself in an undying way to either of the parties. And I'm not going to lie. I'm not exactly thrilled with any of the horses in this next presidential race. Not the candidates seeking the Republican nomination, nor the current Commander-in-Chief. So that means that I'll be having to put my little ol' brain into overdrive to try and pick through all of the garbage put out there by their respective political machines to figure out who truly is worthy of my vote. No easy task, but certainly worth the effort. I fully intend to exercise my right to vote, which will ensure my right to complain down the road. It's the American way.

Curious Questions
About Conjoined Twins

Everyone has been talking about the conjoined twins recently born in Brazil. The boys, named Emanoel & Jesus, because their mother considers them "Christmas Miracles," each have their own brain and spinal cord, but share all other organs. (Sources indicate they've taken to breast feeding quite nicely and have a "healthy appetite!")

I recently watched a video on a set of conjoined twins from Minnesota. Abby & Brittany Hensel got their drivers license. (Apparently, they had to take the test twice...once for each girl.) I have to admit, I'm FREAKING OUT watching this video. I am astounded by how they move so fluidly. And I end up with more questions about who controls what parts and how that shared "control" works. Watching them drive a car in this clip is downright astounding.

These girls are amazing--that goes without saying. And I'm not intending to make light of their situation...but seriously. The girls are now 20...soon to be 21. Hello alcohol! How bizarre would that be to not want to have another drink, but your conjoined twin insists on tying one on? What if you get "sick" after a bender? Ewww!!

A bigger question I have is in the romantic department. How will that work? Is it going to be one lucky guy who ends up marrying them both? Hard to fathom. Bottom line...I'm fascinated. I know I would have an incredibly difficult time operating in life as a conjoined twin--so I applaud all that the Hensel twins have been able to accomplish! What do you think? Drop us an email!

It's a "Melting Pot o' Hotties!!" I am so excited about the line up for Country JAM so far this year...and there's still more to come!! But now we just found out about another three acts, which are sure to warm the cockles of anyone's heart, should they find a pair of tickets in their stocking for Christmas!! Jake Owen, Craig Morgan and Montgomery-Gentry have just been added to the already sweet list of good lookin' country artists! I should add that they are all phenomenal live performers too. I mean, it's not ALL about their backsides...right?! :)

Bad Year for Fantasy Dictator League

Wow...lots of dictators have bit the dust this year. Is it a sign from above?? Hard to say. With the most recent--North Korea's Kim Jong Il, it leaves more uncertainty than any of the others.

This guy was a head case for sure. He inherited power from his father in 1994 and North Korean legend has it that Kim was born on Mount Paektu, one of Korea's most cherished sites in 1942. A birth heralded in the heavens by a pair of rainbows and a brilliant new star! Soviet records, however indicate he was born in Sibera in 1941. But when you're a dictator--you can spin a tale any way you want and your people are forced to believe.

Kim died two days prior to the official announcement of his death. I guess officials wanted to make sure everything was "perfect" prior to letting word get out to the public. Makes me wonder if he actually did suffer a heart attack on a train. That almost sounds too "nice" of an end for this guy, who had an affection for nuclear missles.

His eldest son, Kim Jong Nam is apparently the black sheep of the family after trying to enter Japan back in 2001 on a fake passport--saying he wanted to visit Disney's Tokyo Resort. The twisted humor in me pictures a great advertising campaign for the entertainment giant now: Opening shot of a newspaper headline with the announcement of Kim Jong Il's death...fade to a shot of his eldest son, as an announcer asks, "Kim Jong Nam...your dictator father has just died...what are you going to do?!" And he replies with a huge, beaming smile, "I'm going to Disney!"

Suffice it to say--Kim Jong Nam won't be taking over the reigns of the country. Kim Jong Il has two other sons by another woman--Kim Jong Chol and Kim Jong Un. Both boys are in their 20's. It's expected that the youngest, Kim Jong Un will be the successor of power.

We don't really know a whole lot about him. I've read that he loves James Bond movies and basketball great, Michael Jordan. That--and he's only been "groomed" to take over the leadership role for about 3 years...that's not much, compared to the 14 years that his father received from his father. Sources say that Kim Jong Un's uncle, Jang Song Thaek will likely rule from behind the scenes.

Regardless, I think the world will be walking on eggshells for quite some time. I'm hopeful that the new young leader has a better understanding of compassion and peace. That would be the ultimate Christmas Miracle!!

No Effin Allowed

Ann Marie Kennedy, a Limerick University employee in Ireland, has been campaigning to get her hometown of "Effin" acknowledged by Facebook. At this point, the social media monster has not allowed her to enter Effin as her hometown onto her profile, due to it resembling a shorthanded four-letter word.

Kennedy says she's "a proud Effin woman" and that there are lots of other Effin people who would like to see Facebook allow them to list Effin as their hometown.

The irony of this whole Effin deal is that Facebook has had a European headquarters located in Ireland since 2008, so one would think they would be familiar with Effin.

Hairy Situation for Braun

Over the weekend, ESPN's Outside the Lines broke the news that Major League Baseball's National League star, Ryan Braun had tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. A huge blow for Milwaukee Brewer fans who had enjoyed watching him lead their team to their first divisional title in 30 years, and score the National League "Most Valuable Player" award as well.

Braun is disputing the charges, as anyone would expect. A second test has reportedly come back with a negative reading. That test indicated that the testosterone was "exogenous," meaning it came from outside of his body.

Now, I'm no expert on performance enhancing drugs and the tests that MLB perform on the players, but I do know a little bit about the psychology of people. Here's my take on this: Braun, who is 28 years old...after enjoying a phenomenal year--has allowed society to make him take a harsh look at himself. I mean a guy who was that outstanding in his field (yes, pun intended) surely must have flaws SOMEWHERE right?

Enter the biggest thing that men fret about, but act like they don't. Hair loss.

Yep. I believe that Ryan Braun had begun to use something along the lines of Rogaine and it marred the first test he took. It's certainly possible. And he has been sporting longer locks as of lately, which is what most guys do when they fear they are losing their hair. Grow it longer.

You might question this theory of mine, as his hair wasn't exactly looking like it was thinning a whole lot, but who here hasn't ever heard the old saying "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?"

And what guy wants to own up to fretting over losing his hair? Better off to take preventative actions than to deal with it after everyone has already seen a prominent receding hairline. Case in point: NASCAR's Matt Kenseth (ironically also a Wisconsin favorite) had been battling the old widow's peak. After he started tasting success with the big boys, lo and behold--just like that--his hair started to "grow" back! Magic Bananas!

And Kenseth has taken a lot of ribbing by some for his "vanity" to take those measures to fix his hairline. He's actually quite sensitive about it, as I've heard him comment to one snarky reporter at an event. He was polite, but asked the jerk to please "let it go."

So, yes...men are sensitive about their hair and the possibility of being without it. I'm going with this storyline as to why Braun got the positive reading on one test, but not the other. I guess we'll find out soon enough if my thoughts are indeed correct and he avoids a 50 game suspension and saves his reputation...as well as his hair.

Today marks the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I'm a history buff and enjoy looking at old movies and pictures, but watching the footage from that day is haunting. This is no video game. It's real lives lost. Chilling.

Thank you to all who have served and continue to serve in our military.

Calling Mars

I know there are inherent differences between the sexes, but there's one distinct characteristic of men that tends to drive me insane. Cellphones. Not just the phone itself, but the way men handle their calls.

For instance, when I call my guy--and leave him a message--he never listens to it. Instead, he'll just call me directly and say, "What did you want?"

Which is usually followed by my stock response, "Did you listen to my message?"

"Nope. I just called you back."

Now in his mind, I KNOW he thinks he's "saving time" by just calling me, rather than listening to the voice mail message. (At least that's how it's being justified when I ask him why he didn't listen to it.) But seriously, why leave a message if he's not going to listen to it?

So when I decided to not to leave a message, then he "worries" something is wrong.

To make matters worse, if your guy neglects to ever listen to his messages, invariably his voice mail box will fill up and no longer be able to accept messages. But then maybe that's his desired end game?

I've talked to one other listener who agreed wholeheartedly with me that it's maddening when her guy does that too. So at least I know I'm not alone.

It begs the question though...is this an across the board "guy thing?" Like the "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" differences outlined in that famous book? Or are there actually guys out there who listen to their voice messages BEFORE returning a phone call? And actually clean out their voice mail boxes periodically? Drop us an email!

Just Can't Help Myself

As most people know, I am an avid Minnesota Viking fan. And as anyone with a brain knows, it's been incredibly difficult to be a Viking fan this season. Actually, let's be honest--it's been incredibly difficult for the past several years. But I'm not complaining. You're welcome to give me all the grief you want, but you have to respect anyone who continues to stand by their team through thick and thin. And as long as we're being honest--Packer fans, who are not recent to the bandwagon, are fully aware of dark stretches with their own team. Every team has those dismal times...when NOTHING goes right and you are perennially the butt of every joke. I'm there right now. (Good thing I'm a fan of butt's.)

Combine this bleak season for the Vikings with my inability to stop betting on football. Now mind you, I'm not betting big bucks here. It started innocently enough with my office-mate, Chris Callaway--a major Packer fan. We bet lunch on the initial Viking-Packer game this season. Obviously, I lost. We bet on the rematch at Lambeau. And I was feeling pretty confident because afterall--the Vikings looked pretty darn good with the new quarterback, Christian Ponder. But alas...I ended up buying Chris lunch again the following week.

Then along came Thanksgiving. By now, it was just spite. I figured FOR SURE the Detroit Lions would beat the Packers in that game, so I made the lunch bet again...and lost...again. And I was ready to give up the ghost on the whole "betting against the Packers" deal, until some discussion with friends, who said--"if the Packers are going to lose a game this season, it's this week against the Giants!"

Sold. (Apparently, I'm gullible. That, or God really IS a Packer fan.) And so here I am--having to buy another lunch for Chris, as his Packers have won yet again.

I've justified this whole ordeal as I'm helping a young man who is just starting out in his career. A guy who is 6 foot-4 with two hollow legs probably never gets enough to eat, right?

That theory works for a little while, until I see his smirking face in the office...pouring over online menus and salivating onto his keyboard...but I digress. I think I'm just going to call this my charity work for this season of giving. I AM giver. What can I say?

But I think I'm done with this betting against the Packers...except maybe that last game against the Lions. Maybe.

Ok, we've all been horrified by past school photos that lurk in boxes at our parents house--praying that they never see the light of day again. But when you're a celebrity, chances are there are plenty of former classmates who have a yearbook with those horrid snapshots...and they just can't help themselves. They need to put those pics out there!

So, we're sharing them. I know, it's slightly mean. But given that these country superstars easily have seven-figure bank accounts, I'm sure that these pictures would have them laughing all the way to the bank anyway.

Stupid Is As Stupid Does

I don't know about you, but if I had a Corvette--I sure as heck wouldn't be this stupid behind the wheel. I mean, don't get me wrong...I'd sure "give 'er berries" from time to time, but it's a bit pathetic the lack of skills one of these drivers has that ultimately causes the damage. This is from the Houston, TX area on Thanksgiving day.

Better Than "The Club?"

What is the best car-theft deterrent? A high-tech alarm system? "The Club" steering wheel lock system? Or is it just a plain old stick shift car?!

Apparently, it's the later, as was the case in California over the weekend.

A man was unloading groceries in front of his house, when three men forced him, by way of waggling a gun around, to hand over his keys. The three thugs hopped into the man's car, but promptly bolted away on foot, when they came to the realization that none of them could drive a stick shift! What a bunch of nincompoops!

Heinous!

I'm so grateful I live in the Midwest. Don't get me wrong--I realize we have our share of kooky folk who do bad things (Ed Gein, Jeffrey Dahmer, etc.) but for the most part--there is a spirit of goodwill and genuine caring for community in the Midwest.

This is not the first time a heinous story (or several) have been reported after Black Friday where horrible human behavior was prevalent, which in and of itself--is pretty sad. Did you hear about the guy who suffered a heart attack at a Target in West Virginia...only to have shoppers STEP OVER HIM to get their sale items?! HEINOUS!!

Or the irrational woman who used pepper spray in a Walmart in Los Angeles to snag a video game at their Black Friday sale. Really?! If this is the current mentality out there...I think I'll keep my roots firmly planted here in the Midwest.

Again--I know we have freak shows around these parts from time to time--but generally speaking, there is a much better sense of charity and caring for neighbors--whether you know them or not! Agree or disagree? Drop us an email!

Breaking Tradition

I made the decision yesterday that we were going to have steak on Thanksgiving, rather than the traditional turkey. This announcement was met with disdain from several friends.

"Are you kidding?! It's THANKSGIVING...you're supposed to have turkey!"

Sure. But I've never done what I'm "supposed" to do. Ask my Mom. She'd quickly agree with that statement. Quite frankly, it's served me well in life. And I suspect this decision will fare just fine as well.

Think about it. There's only two of us. I am a beast on the grill. (I totally hate cooking in the kitchen...I break out in hives.) PLUS, the grill cleans up WAY faster than a kitchen full of pots, pans and dishes--which translates to getting on the sofa to watch football sooner.

"Winner, winner--chicken dinner!" Well, in this case...STEAK dinner.

But seriously, is it THAT big of a deal that I'm doing something other than the traditional turkey for Thanksgiving? What are your thoughts? Drop us an email.

Muppet Nail Polish!!

I admit it. I went to the premiere of the original "Muppet Movie" back in 1979. I was one happy kid too. LOVED the Muppet Show and when it came to the big screen--I was SO excited!

Now there's a NEW Muppet movie coming out Thanksgiving weekend! "The Muppets" return to the silver screen on November 23rd and OPI Nail Polish has debuted a new line of polishes with the beloved Muppets as the inspiration!

My personal favorite is either "Warm & Fozzie" or "Devine Swine," based upon Fozzie Bear and Miss Piggy. But there are some other fabulous shades that represent Animal...Kermit...Gonzo and even Beaker!

It would appear M.A.C. Cosmetics is also unveiling a Miss Piggy inspired make-up line as well! She's a regular Kim Kardashian...minus the 72-day marriage!

What Are the Demands?

I sort of understood what the "Occupy Wall Street" protesters were doing originally when they set out to draw attention to a disparity between those who know how to make a profit and those who aren't able to do so. I sort of understood the whole "we are the 99%," but I also know that I'm personally not perturbed at those on Wall Street. We all make choices of what we want to do in life. Remember being asked as a child, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" For the record, I said an artist. (Paint, drawing) Of course, I don't know a whole lot of artists who make six-figure salaries...but I digress.

Back to my original question. I'm not clear on what the "demands" are of the Occupy Wall Street protesters. The story was just released that early this morning, New York Police evicted all of the protesters from Zuccotti Park. The protesters were all told to pack up their belongings and leave so officials could clean up the park. There were concerns over "health and fire safety hazards" since the encampment had been in place for two months. I can understand that. Two months is a long time for trash, urine and other smelly things to build up...in a public park--no less. So officials "evicted" the protesters so they could clean up the park and allowed them to re-enter the park four hours later--only WITHOUT any "tents, sleeping bags, tarps or other similar materials."

I can understand that. It is, afterall--a public park. Kids could hardly play catch with a parent with all of those folks squatting there. I also understand that taxpayer dollars are being used to pay those who have to do the clean-up and policing. That alone kind of makes this whole never-ending protest one of those "cut off your nose to spite your face" deals...wouldn't you agree?

But again--what is the end game of this "protest?" I believe they've made their point. They certainly garnered plenty of media attention...albeit some of it not so positive. This'll make you go "Awwww!". David Nelson chose love when celebrating his touchdown in Buffalo's game in Dallas. After catching a TD in the second quarter, he immediately ran over to his girlfriend, Dallas Cowboys cheerleader Kelsi Reisch, hugged her and handed her the ball. Nelson said earlier this week that he had something planned in case he was close to her when he scored a TD. He actually had to run up the length of the field to give her the ball, but he did it all for the glory of love. Click the picture below to see the video.

Drug Helps Couch Potato Monkeys Lose Weight

Lucky monkeys. They got to pig-out on food to bulk up for this experiment and then have this experimental drug used on them, which actually slimmed them down--despite their lack of exercise! (No word on if the monkeys were all given a real couch and TV with remote.)

I guess the drug worked. The monkeys lost 11% of their body weight without dieting or exercising. That's amazing, really. But kind of scary when you think about it. I mean what in life has ever been easy to do or obtain without a downside...or side effects? My Mom has always told me that things that are worth working for are never easy to achieve. If it were easy...everyone would be doing it!

Will that saying be obsolete now because of this drug?

Researchers have applied for FDA approval so they can begin trials in people, possibly within a year. According to sources, if the drug ends up being effective in humans--it would never be a permanent solution. Instead, it would be a "kick-start" used along with future diet and exercise.

Right. Couch potatoes are going to suddenly want to diet and exercise after this "magic drug" has made them thinner? Maybe some of them will...but I think it's a flawed premise. Unless you're ready to commit and work for it...it won't be long-term results. And if someone continues to eat this drug like candy? Who knows what kind of long-term side effects will come to light?

THANK YOU VETERANS!

It's really a shame that we only take one day each year to thank our veterans. Honestly, it should be a daily occurrence. We owe them so much. And so many people take for granted the freedoms we have because of the service of our veterans.

I was fortunate enough to have a life-changing experience by going on the first Freedom Honor Flight for the La Crosse area back in October of 2008. I have always respected our veterans--but that experience of watching WWII vets see their Memorial out in Washington, D.C. was AMAZING. The stories I was fortunate enough to hear...the people I was able to meet...it puts life into perspective more than ever. I am forever grateful...both for the experience and for all that veterans have sacrificed.

Today is a special day. In more ways than one. There will be a Veterans Day Breakfast this morning at the Hall of Veterans Monument at the UWL Veterans Memorial Stadium. The program starts at 8:30am. There will be a FREE breakfast afterward in Mitchell Hall for all veterans. Student athlete volunteers will be serving the catered breakfast. I think that's pretty cool!

There Are No Winners

Former La Crosse County Sheriff's Deputy, Trisha Stratman was acquitted of vehicular homicide yesterday in the case where her speeding squad car impacted another vehicle--killing 16-year-old Brandon Jennings on July 18th, 2010. Facebook and Twitter was buzzing yesterday with lots of opinions. It seemed that most people were either irate beyond words that Stratman was deemed "innocent"...while others were happy that she was.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I can tell you that there are no "winners" in this case. A family has lost their son--that goes without saying the incredible loss they have endured and will continue to as the years pass. But make no mistake--Stratman will be living with this for the rest of her life as well. If you think for one moment that she set out for this to happen--you'd be wrong. It was a series of incredibly unfortunate events that transpired that night. Plenty of lives were destroyed or damaged severely.

I'm not sure exactly what "punishment" those who are angry over the judgement were seeking. I have to believe that living with the memory of the incident will haunt Stratman far worse than any physical punishment could do. We are always hardest on ourselves.

I feel awful for the family and friends of Brandon. There is a terrible void that they can't fill. Hopefully over time they will find some healing and strength to keep themselves from falling into a dark abyss--or navigate their way out of it--if they've already landed there.

I feel awful for Trisha Stratman. She will replay the horror of that night over and over in her head and whether you believe it or not--I would venture a pretty solid guess that she has deep remorse over what transpired that night. Living the rest of her life with that is not going to be easy. I hope and pray she can find a way to make amends with the family and herself.

I've made mistakes in my life that have unleashed a terrible string of events that I wish I could take back. But you can't turn back time. All you can do is find a way to put one foot in front of the other and try to make sure you don't make a mis-step again. No easy feat because you begin to doubt yourself...all the time. Nothing is the same ever again.

Bottom line is no one knows what the Jennings family is truly going through...and no one knows what Ms. Stratman is going through reliving that night again and again in her mind. We all need to try to be understanding and know that neither side in this case is a winner. And that's plain and simple--the saddest reality of it all.

CMA Fashion

Faux Pas

In fairness...I'm quite sure that the ladies that I'll be singling out here were very smitten with their outfit choices...and I'm not saying they were HORRENDOUS...well...one of them was...but we'll get to that in a minute.

Carrie Underwood opened the show in hysterical style with Brad Paisley. I LOVED the Tim & Faith Barbie Doll bit. That had tears rolling down my face. And I was grateful for the great opening, as it distracted me from Carrie's "Crumb-Catcher" dress. The big flap that stuck out from her chest looked suitable for capturing shards of granola or other vegan delights.

Miranda Lambert performed "Baggage Claim," which in my opinion is her best uptempo song to date. However...I was incredibly distracted by the wrestling title belt-looking-shirt she was sporting. Seriously. It was garish. I'm not sure what she was thinking in deciding to wear that. It almost made one wonder if she was attempting to hide a baby bump...but later outfits quelled that thought immediately.

Carrie & Miranda's outfits weren't THAT bad...just distracting and you should wear the clothes...not have them wear YOU. But by far--the worst outfit of the night belonged to Natasha Bettingfield, when she graced the stage with Rascal Flatts to sing "Easy."

What was she wearing?! (See photo above) That skirt looked like voluminous folds of pink bathroom rugs and toilet seat covers. Probably not a good thing to conjure up visions of a bathroom when you're making your debut in front of the nation's country contingent. Just sayin'...

And finally, when Martina McBride performed--she chose to wear a white pant suit. I have no problem with that. Martina looks fabulous in everything...it's just that the pant suit looked like it was several sizes too big. It hung on her and didn't show off her fantastic physique. Still love her and wish she'd get the "Female Vocalist" again sometime soon. She is SO deserving.

Quiet Meets Curious

I would never make it deer hunting. I'm too chatty. I tend to struggle to sit quietly, unless I'm reading a book. And if I'm reading a book in the woods...I'd likely miss the buck walking by now, wouldn't I? But this hunter is pretty amazing. Not only does he remain silent in his tree stand...but he remains calm when a black bear proceeds to CLIMB up it!

I'm not totally sure how I would've responded to that, but this guy was cool as a cucumber.

Keith Urban Having Throat Surgery

Keith Urban needs throat surgery. The country star has developed a polyp on his vocal cords that needs to be removed. A post on his website describes the operation as a minor, out-patient procedure, but adds that afterwards Keith will still need to be on "complete voice rest followed by an undetermined period of recuperation." As a result, all of Urban's planned appearances after the surgery -- including his "We're All For The Hall" benefit -- have been postponed. In addition, before the operation Keith will only make appearances in which he just has to sing one song. The tour page on Urban's website has him scheduled twice for the Grand Ole Opry -- on November 12th and November 26th. In addition, Keith is expected to perform at the 45th annual CMA Awards.

TP Tradition = Technical Foul

No Worries!

So, Halloween was this week...and I know in the little town that I grew up in--toilet papering someone's yard was always an annual tradition. But there's another toilet papering tradition that happens at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas...during their opening basketball game each season.

The first basket the team makes in the first game of each season unleashes a flurry of toilet paper onto the court...and a technical foul. Apparently, the coach embraces it and knows it's coming. He actually supports it because it's tradition...and it's spirited fun.

"MEAT or TREAT!!"

Why didn't we do this when I was a kid?! I LOVE Beef Jerky!!! What a great concept! Instead of handing out sugary treats...you have the option to give kids MEAT! What parent wouldn't be proud to have their kid haul home some New York Strip or a juicy Ribeye?! YUM!!

Ok, before you get all up in arms...I understand the La Crosse Police Department issuing their annual Halloween comments and referring to the tradition as "Meet & Treat" instead of "Trick or Treat," but seriously. Do you believe that by changing the lingo it will really deter pranksters from their antics?

It seems like a trick of it's own...like what our elected officials utilize in Washington, where nefarious legislation is dubbed with a spiffy name to make it sound like it's not really going to be a drain on your income in the form of more taxes...but I digress...

Regardless of how the kids holler it on your doorstep this evening--here's to hoping that your car is free of egg and soap in the morning...and that there's still some candy left over for yourself after the doorbell has stopped ringing.

As for me...since I have been snitching candy for the past two weeks--I might have to resort to handing out slabs of chicken or beef roast. So please don't be horrified if your kids knock on my door for "Meat & Treat" tonight.

Is There a Difference?

People get their feathers ruffled over lots of different things. We all do. But I found it interesting listening to some friends talk about both of these stories, and what their takes were on them:

Rob Gronkowski, tight end for the New England Patriots posed for several pictures with porn star, Bibi Jones in someone's bedroom and she posted them to her Twitter account earlier this week.

Lindsay Lohan wrapped up shooting a Playboy spread earlier this week too, for which she will receive $1-million.

The funny thing is to listen to people's opinions on both stories. There are many who are outraged that Gronkowski would allow himself to willingly be photographed with a porn star, when he is a prominent player with the NFL. Then there are those who say the pictures are fairly harmless and what he chooses to do in his personal life is just that--his personal life.

Lindsay Lohan for the most part is drawing criticism almost across the board. (Although I have talked to a few guys who are salivating at getting their copy of Playboy when it comes out.) Many have written her off as of late anyway due to her legal woes and inability to "clean up" her act--so this latest deal with Playboy just seems to reinforce people's generally negative opinion of her.

Are either of these two "bad" people for having these pictures taken of them? Is there a difference? Were they irresponsible for their choices? Are we more forgiving of athletes than actors? Drop us an email and tell us what you think.

Still Delivering Great Stories

So, admittedly--I haven't been watching the X Factor reality talent show for several weeks. Life gets in the way of gratuitous TV watching sometimes, right?! But I did finally watch it again last night--the first LIVE night of performances on the show! The acts that got cut last night were really a no brainer to me. It was obvious who was not going to make the cut.

I was pleased to see all of the contestants that had "wowed" me with their talent and stories were still in the final "17" with a shot at winning the big prize. Chris Rene, the recovering addict with a lot of soul in his voice is still in the running in the "Boys" category...as is Josh Krajcik, who used to sling burritos. I agreed with one of the judges when they said that Josh's voice "ripped through the air," because it was a very piercing and engaging performance. Both of them made the cut into the final "12."

Stacy Francis is also still in the running in the "Over 30" category. She was the single Mom who had been beat down emotionally by her previous love interest. She made the cut into the final "12" last night.

There was a group called "Stereo Hogzz" that I vaguely remember seeing in the audition phase...liked them a lot then...and I'd say they have an excellent shot at winning the $5-million prize package!

There were a lot of very young talents that made it to the final 12 as well. Rachel Crow, a 13-year old phenom vocalist who is quirky and loveable. There's another young girl in the running in that same category--who just goes by "Drew" now. She's 14 and has an amazing voice. "Astro" is the name of a young boy who does rap. And while he was entertaining and certainly did not lack in confidence, I found him to be overly full of himself and I would not expect that he will garner enough votes from the public to move on much further in the competition. And being knocked out might be enough to make him a better performer in the future. Humility does a lot for people, if you know what I mean.

Perhaps Simon Cowell has been served up a nice dose of humility as well, because the viewers have not been what he predicted it would be. And while I'm always in favor for over-confident folk to be knocked down a peg or two...it kind of bums me out because I believe that part of the reason that people have not been that interested in the preliminaries of the X Factor is because they didn't showcase a whole lot of awful auditions, like American Idol does. For whatever reason, people just love to watch train wrecks.

Regardless, from here--we will be able to begin voting on who we want to win the Grand Prize. I have a feeling more people will watch now that they have it honed down to the final acts and viewers actually have a say in the outcome. And to be honest--I think the pool of talent on this show rivals many of the American Idol finalists from over the years. What do you think? Drop us an email.

Update: End of the World is Tomorrow

In case you missed the third revised date for the "End of the World" as presented by Harold Camping's beliefs--tomorrow--Friday, October 21st, 2011 is going to be the end of the world. I don't know about you, but there's a lot I haven't gotten done yet, so I'm hoping he's wrong...again.

And while we all chuckle about this guy and his unending changes to when the actual "End of the World" will be...it does serve as a great reminder to keep your house in order, because you never do know when the end really will be here. The "End of the World," or even your last day alive.

Life is precious. You never know when the ride will end. Live with no regrets and always treat everyone as if it's your last day...

LoCash Cowboys

Fiddle Player Passes

Ryan "Troop" Jones, who we had the pleasure of seeing up close and in action on stage with his bandmates in the LoCash Cowboys this past March at the Stoney Creek Inn for our "JAM Bash with LoCash," died yesterday after a pretty extensive battle with health issues.

Ryan was admitted to a Nashville hospital back in July with a life-threatening ulcer, which is why we didn't see him on stage at Country JAM. Shortly after that--he developed pneumonia, which led to other complications.

He was an incredibly talented fiddle player, who also did acoustic and mandolin duties with the band. He was only 30.

The LoCash Cowboys tweeted yesterday, "Today is a sad day in the Locash World. We lost Ryan "Troop" Jones...our Brother & our Best Friend. Our thoughts & prayers go out to his family. TROOP WILL LIVE FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS. -Locash"

Chocolate Confessional

I know I'm not alone on this. There are other women out there who have fallen "victim" to this act...right?! You're rolling through the store and you see the many colorful bags of Halloween candy and decide to buy a couple...so you're "ready for Halloween Trick Or Treaters," or so you think. As it turns out, you end up devouring the entire bag of candy within the first two days of having it at your house.

It's seriously difficult to restrain yourself...isn't it?

Who doesn't love biting the chocolate off of the light wafers on the Kit Kat's? Or even biting away the chocolate coating from a Three Musketeers FUN SIZE bar, leaving only that creamy nougat center?! It's downright delightful!!

And retailers KNOW this. That's why the holidays all get "rushed." They put all of those delicious holiday treats out early, knowing that we'll all buy them "now" only to have to return to get more later, because we've inhaled it all well before the holiday in question.

Manufactured Excitement

NASCAR is guilty of it. And now Indy is too. Sanctioning bodies of racing series trying to "manufacture" high excitement. It's really not necessary for a true race fan. We get racing and are excited about it enough as is. Sanctioning bodies are forever trying to manufacture excitement that will draw in the casual fan...bringing a "new" audience to their sport in the hopes of keeping them.

The problem is--the "powers that be" often don't think their ideas through fully. Indy wanted a big finale to their season. They had a special 5-Million dollar prize package in place that would reward a driver and a fan each half of that big pile of money. It was Vegas baby! That alone was exciting enough...but Indy added more cars to this field--there were a total of 34 cars at Vegas. And while there have been as many as 33 cars at Indianapolis--the track configurations are vastly different. Indy is a flat track--and Vegas is a high-speed banked track. There is significantly less reaction time at the higher speeds reached at Vegas.

The point is--while the big money up for grabs...more cars in the field...super fast track all come together to create over-the-top excitement...at what point do drivers or teams...or even officials with the series speak up and say..."Umm...this is a pretty bad combination that could lead to disaster."

No one would do that. Who would want to be the one to "whine" about risks? Racing is all about risks. Everyone one of those drivers know that when they strap into their machines.

Nonetheless, the combination proved deadly for Dan Wheldon when his car went airborne and twisted in the air--putting his open cockpit toward the catchfence, where he met his demise.

Of course, there are many factors to consider. Wheldon never seemed to lift on the throttle when the carnage began ahead of him. Was this spotter error? Was he focused on picking up spots when he saw what was happening ahead of him? Did he even see what was happening ahead of him? No one will ever know what he was thinking behind the wheel in those final moments. Hindsight is 20-20 for those of us who are not making split-second decisions behind the wheel of a high-powered race car.

NASCAR plays with fire every time the series heads to a restrictor plate race track. This weekend, they are running at Talladega and officials have already been plotting changes to the plates to try to get rid of their previously manufactured doggie-style tandem racing that we've been treated to earlier this season. "The fans have responded negatively to that," officials were quoted as saying.

No doubt. Why not just let the drivers drive and put it in their hands and abilities, instead of trying to manufacture "excitement?" In my opinion, meddling with the elements of racing is like genetic engineering. At some point, you're going to end up with a big mess...morally and otherwise.

The evidence is a photo from the 1860s that features a man who looks like the Grease star. In the auction's description, the seller writes, "For those of you who don't know, John Travolta is a Scientologist and many Scientologists believe in a type of reincarnation. Scary Moments at the Washington Monument

Very scary video of the interior of the Washington Monument when the earthquake struck the east coast a few weeks ago. This is actual National Park Service surveillance video. (Note that there is no sound)

As for he current state of the monument, it will be closed indefinitely to visitors as engineers continue to survey damage the historical landmark sustained during last month's earthquake. A clearer picture of the damage is expected in mid-October, but for now officials know the exterior stones have cracks, rain water has seeped inside the structure through cracks, the elevator system only works up to the 250-foot level of the 555-foot monument and soft mortar in between the stones crumbled during the quake.

X-Factor Delivered

REAL Moments

I admit it. I am a reality TV junkie...only when it comes to singing/talent competitions. I guess I'm enthralled with the idea of being able to see someone before they "hit it big." I don't know. Regardless of the reasoning, Simon Cowell has hit another home run in my opinion with his new reality talent show--"The X Factor."

While I applaud the show--it's still not as good as my absolute favorite show, "The Voice," but it has a lot of the same elements that "The Voice" does and that's probably why I like it so much. They don't do blind auditions, which is by far the most interesting part of "The Voice," but they do have the auditions held in a large stadium (4300 fans packed the house!) and their cheering really creates some magical moments for the contestants...and the home viewers for that matter!

Case in point--Stacey Francis...single mother of two, who has been told for over a decade that she was "too old" and didn't have the talent to "make it" in the music business by her significant other. (She had left him and struck out on her own, as according to her own words--he was abusive in more ways than just mental.) Sad story, if that really was the case--but Stacey shined brightly on the stage. She sang Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman." The crowd went bananas for her and you could feel the raw emotional rush that she was experience by just looking at her face. She was in awe that this stadium was screaming accolades of appreciation for her. It was a magical moment. And as mascara streamed down her face (that's real emotion baby!) Simon Cowell told her that her performance was likely the best audition he has EVER seen! Great story. They left me wanting to follow her story.

Another really emotional story and performance came from Chris Rene, who is a recovering addict. Seventy days clean at the time of this audition. He looked a little rough around the edges, but you could tell there was something solid deep inside of him. He has a little boy that he obviously loves very much and he really opened up about his addictions and what prompted him to finally get clean: the embarrassment and shame of knowing he had become this person. That's real. And so was Chris.

He performed an original song that he wrote. And it was amusing to watch Simon roll his eyes at those words...and then melt into amazement as he drank in every verse of the lyrics that wove the tale of Chris climbing out of his addiction to find something better. It was real. It was another magical moment when the crowd went crazy for him. He was also brought to tears. Judge L.A. Reid was obviously VERY impressed with him, as he essentially let Chris know that he has plans for him. (meaning a career) That is awesome to see opportunities open up for average people on a reality show. (Not sure how long this video will be available, but at 2:38, you can see his performance!)

And while these two particular stories were fantastic...the show DID have a real HEINOUS incident that was obviously a gratuitous move for ratings...so SHAME ON THEM for not allowing the other great stories be the reason people would be talking about it today. The "heinous moment?" A guy who came out to sing his "original song" and dropped his pants to reveal his schlong, which he waggled around for all to see. Why am I disgusted at this, when normally I would laugh? Because it was done in that stadium of 4300 people...which included young kids...AND because they did NOT stop him. Yep. They let the insanity on national TV continue...likely for ratings.

That is a major mark against the show--but the two magical moments for Stacey and Chris will allow me to give them another chance. I will be watching the "X Factor" again. (tape delayed, because "The Vampire Diaries" and "The Big Bang Theory" are on tonight too!)

Amazing Rescue Caught On Video!

This is one of the most amazing videos we've ever seen! Brandon Wright and his family are thanking the more than a half dozen people that lifted a burning car and pulled him to safety after he crashed his motorcycle earlier this week. The accident and heroic rescue took place Monday in Logan, Utah near the Utah State University campus after the 21-year-old collided with a BMW that was pulling out of a parking lot. Several students and construction workers rushed to the scene and managed to lift the car, which weighs about 4,000-pounds, to free Wright. The dramatic rescue was caught on video by university staffer Chris Garff and has gone viral. Yesterday, Wright told The Associated Press by telephone from his hospital bed, "I'm just very thankful for everyone that helped me out. They saved my life." Wright wasn't wearing a helmet, but didn't suffer head trauma. He's listed in satisfactory condition with two broken legs, a broken pelvis and burns on his left foot, abrasions on his forehead and road rash on his body.

Tim & Faith Barbie Dolls?

What better way to celebrate your 15th wedding anniversary?! That's what Faith Hill & Tim McGraw have decided. The two have inked a deal with Mattel to release the dolls in September for the paltry price of $69.99 at BarbieCollector.com.

The dolls were painstakingly designed with plenty of input by Tim and Faith. Detailed photos of their outfits of choice as well as several photos of the hairstyle of preference for Faith were sent over to the designers. Creating the prototypes alone took two months.

The dolls come with little microphones too. Isn't that sweet?

Personally, I don't think the Tim doll looks a whole lot like him. It resembles Ashton Kutcher more so, in my opinion. The Faith doll does look a bit like her, but then again--it's easier to give a pass on dolls with lots of make-up on them. (Maybe Tim needed more make-up?)

Engagement Ring

for a Job Interview?

I know what you're expecting the next line of thinking to be...something to do with a woman looking more able to tackle tasks at work if she isn't "attached" to someone that she needs to hurry home to...or have eventual plans to have babies and be on maternity leave, instead of working in the office, right?

Nope. Although, I somehow think that could be a reason for some bosses.

That's not the story here. And apparently, it really only applies to huge diamond rings. Recently a woman who worked for a large accounting firm inquired about getting a salary bump after coming back from her maternity leave. She was told that she didn't need one because she had a large engagement ring. She's currently suing the company. And while the whole suing issue could be a whole other blog entry...I'm focused on the bling thing.

Seriously...I can see the logic behind this, if you're someone who sports a monstrous diamond. It sends a message...and not exactly a positive one, mostly because we live in a catty world. Big ring = high maintenance...or perhaps sends the message that you really don't need a job or money. It can be perceived as a frivolous thing for someone to drop so much money on.

Me personally, I never wanted a huge diamond. I worry that I'd wreck it or lose it. I recognize that I'm just not that responsible to have the weight of a big @ss diamond on my hand. But regardless--it's an interesting topic of discussion.

Sex Strike for

Road Repairs?!

Wow. This one is admirable. I guess. Three-hundred women in Columbia have banded together and are withholding sex from their husbands until they pressure local authorities to repair and maintain the road between Barbacoas to the next town, which is about 35 miles away.

While I poke fun at this--mostly because the thought of cutting a spouse off from sex seems a bit extreme to me...and virtually impossible to see through...at least from my personal opinion...this is a pretty serious problem.

Apparently, this road is prone to mudslides and has taken many lives. I think we all know around here how serious mudslides can be--as we dealt with them in 2007...but we're not living in an area where the government is horribly corrupt and we have top notch emergency teams to call upon. Imagine what a disaster like a mudslide would be like to endure over there?

At any rate, the women are hoping that they can prompt their husbands to convince the government to fix the road. If this works for them...who knows? Maybe women of the world can force other great things to be achieved...like world peace, just by crossing our legs.

Holy Huge Baby!!

Good grief! I feel so sorry for this woman...I can only imagine what Emily Maldanado of Salinas, Californa went through to bring her bundle of joy to term. Little...er...BIG Matthew Anthony Maldanado had his mother in labor for TWO DAYS before doctors finally performed a cesarean delivery. (Seriously...what doctor lets a woman labor for TWO DAYS before finally giving her relief with a cesarean??)

His birth weight? FOURTEEN POUNDS...and three-point-eight ounces.

Personally, I think the 3.8oz. adds a twist of the knife to the 14 pounds, but that's just me.

Wow. That is one huge baby! Makes me feel thin today. And with any luck, Matthew Anthony will grow up to be a lineman for a professional football team and reward Mom & Dad with a solid retirement!

Wardrobe Malfunction!

Oh boy! How embarrassing?! Taylor's in the middle of "You Belong With Me," and for whatever reason--a huge blast of air shoots up from below and her billowy skirt goes flying up HIGH, revealing her panties.

That's embarrassing enough...but she's wearing grandma-underwear. Not exactly what you'd expect to see on a young lady these days. But Taylor's not like other young ladies, now--is she? I guess I'm glad it wasn't a "Lindsey Lohan" moment and she became "over exposed," if you know what I mean.

Stage Collapses At Sugarland Concert

A stage collapse prior to the Sugarland show at the Indiana State Fair Saturday night killed at least five people and injured 43. High winds were to blame for the accident, which occurred after opening act Sara Bareilles had finished her set. Those injured and confirmed dead were located in the VIP "Sugar Pit" area. Following the incident, Sugarland tweeted, "We are alright. We are praying for our fans and the people of Indianapolis. We hope you'll join us. They need our strength." Early Sunday morning, Indiana state police stated that there was a possibility of more deaths. Fair festivities were cancelled yesterday.

Plastic Surgery??

Yep. A recent article in the New York Times drew attention to the fact that because more and more Americans are living longer, they are considering plastic surgery as an option to improve their looks. Now the article does not encourage the procedure for every grandmother or grandfather, but it does state that there has been a pretty big boom in that demographic for buying into going under the knife for improving their appearance.

I have a hard time imagining my grandparents considering this. They were more frugal with their dollars. Rinsing out bread bags to reuse for home-baked bread...utilizing vinegar to clean everything...and my grandpa--bless his heart, used to break down toothpaste tubes to create sinkers for his fishing lines. True story!

You don’t see this very often: The Phildelphia Phillies Chase Utley hit an inside the park home run last night at Citizens Bank Park against the World Champion San Francisco Giants. Utley hit the ball to left-center and it ricocheted off the wall while he went into overdrive. The Giants made a nice relay throw and it looked as if it would be a close call at the plate before Utley left his feet for an airborne head-first slide, away from Giants catcher Eli Whiteside. This creature (for lack of a better term) was found dead alongside Highway 71 in Elroy by a Juneau County Highway Department worker. He said it was completely hairless, almost like leather. It's head almost like a canine...rear legs like a raccoon...and a tail like an opossum.

Has the world gone mad?!

Has the world gone mad? Or do we just have more access to information than what we used to? It's a curious question--especially given the most recent horrific story to come out of...yes...again, it's Florida.

A teenager allegedly bludgeoned his parents to death and then held a party that he announced on Facebook at the house, while his parent's dead bodies were locked into a bedroom.

A nauseating feeling washed over me when I read the headline. And a chill of what this world might end up looking like in a mere 10-15 years if we don't correct the course we're on with this ship. I'm not a "Holy Roller" by any means. And admittedly, I don't make it to church as often as I should. But I WAS raised to believe in a higher power...and respect others...and life. Why is it that the moral fiber of this world seems to be unraveling and more and more becoming non-existent?

I'm not a parent...and I can certainly understand the strains of daily life making it difficult to create more moments to "plug in" with your kids and really connect with them. But when you become a parent...isn't that an unwritten rule? That you MUST find the time to create those moments to "plug in" and teach them the basics of life, morals and the difference between right and wrong?

Not Guilty

I'm embarrassed that my dog shares the same name as this woman. Only one of them is a TRUE b*tch. The prosecution may not have been able to prove "beyond a reasonable doubt" that she was guilty of murdering her daughter, Caylee...but regardless...Casey has proven that she is (was) the worst parent to have ever walked the earth.

It still bothers me that this woman was able to cavort around town partying and getting a tattoo, while her daughter was "missing." The most disgusting part is that Casey will likely make a pile of money off of her "story" with interviews, book & movie deals, etc. That nauseates me immensely.

No Big Surprise

It really wasn't a big surprise to me to see that both Blake Shelton & Adam Levine's "teams" were the top two vote-getters for the finale of "The Voice." I had been predicting that for several weeks now (feel free to page back through our blog for proof.) But you probably felt it too. There was just something in Dia Frampton's voice that was magnetic...and Javier Colon was--hands down--the most talented competitor of the entire bunch. If memory serves correct, he was the only contestant from the get-go who managed to get ALL four coaches to turn around during the blind auditions as well. That alone should've been an indication that he was the front-runner for this contest.

Still--it was almost like vindication to have Blake and Adam's team beat out Christina Aguilera's team. Not to disparage the talent of Beverly McClellan, Christina's "student." Or even CeeLo Green's contestant--Vicci Martinez. They were indeed very talented. There was just something special and endearing about Dia and Javier.

It was super cool to see Dia Frampton perform with Blake's wife, Miranda Lambert. The two did Miranda's "The House that Built Me." And Dia really put her own stamp on it with her phrasing and the tone of her voice. Their voices melded together really beautifully, with Miranda taking the higher part for the harmony. Blake was even moved to tears (again) stating that he finally has figured out what makes her so special to him--that she has become "family" to him. And it was really driven home when he witnessed his wife singing with her on stage.

I'm excited for the second season of "The Voice" to get underway. I think we'll end up seeing some REALLY amazing talent as more and more people are learning about this show. Marty on Dave Tonight!

Marty Stuart will make an appearance tonight on "The Late Show with David Letterman." I'm pretty excited about that! Although, it's quite certain that I won't be able to stay awake that late and still get up on time for work...HELLO DVR!

What did we do before the DVR?! I'm so spoiled by my DVR. Are you too? Do you find yourself trying to rewind every TV (like at a hotel) when you missed something on a show? Or trying to fast-forward through commercials...even if you're watching it "live?" Bananas, huh?

But I will be able to fast-forward my recording of "Letterman" to see Marty's performance...just won't be until probably sometime on Thursday!!

GREAT Show Last Night!

Did you watch "The Voice" last night?! Amazing!!! I tell you what--all of the right people made it to the finale, that's for sure. This show was so much fun to watch! I LOVED every single solo performance the four finalists were so incredible! And it was SUPER cool that the contestants each got to do a duet with their coaches. If you missed it--Blake Shelton did Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" with Dia Frampton. Christina Aguilera did her own song, "Beautiful" with Beverly McClellan. Adam Levine did Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" with Javier Colon and Cee Lo Green did Pat Benatar's "Love Is a Battlefield" with Vicci Martinez. All four of the duets were SUPERB! I don't have an i-pod...I really need to get one...but you can bet your @ss I'd be downloading all of the songs immediately if I did!

I thought it was interesting that aside from Christina, who chose her own song to duet with Beverly...the other three coaches all chose songs from artists of the 80's. I LOVE the 80's!! ;)

This show is so incredibly genuine and entertaining. It makes American Idol look like a lame dog.

All four of the contestants were incredibly good...it could go to any one of them! I guess we'll find out tomorrow night. Who did you vote for? So, I've been thinking about the "Last Chance to JAM" contest that we're doing with the Ashley Furniture Homestore. You know--the contest that will get you into Country JAM for a day...and in the Sky Box seats for one of the acts? Imagine, sitting ON STAGE to see one of your favorites!!

Anyway, I've been pondering what I'd do if I scored Skybox seats for...say...Blake Shelton. Of course, I'd have a tart-a-licious outfit on to attempt to showcase "the girls" for optimum viewing. I know...tacky, right? But whatever. I digress...

I'd create a sign of some sort...maybe a decent little banner that I could unravel with my friend that I would take up there with me. I'd make a play on his song "Kiss My Country @ss" and instead put something like "Kiss My Country Lips!" Not that he'd do it. I mean I think Miranda would kick my country @ss if he did...right after she kicked his. But it's a real attention getter.

Well, before I get the cart before the horse for you on this--you need to make sure you get up to the Ashley Furniture Homestore on Hwy 93 in Arcadia to register to win a pair of tickets to get into JAM and a pair of Skybox seats for one of the acts that day. Frustration with a HandyCam!

I made the "mistake" of recording this past weekend's races at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway in High Definition...thinking--this would be MUCH better quality. Which it is...however, due to where I live (Trempealeau) I do not have the highest speed of internet available. So uploading all of the races has been...well...virtually impossible!

So for anyone who has been wondering where in the heck the videos are this morning...they're on the way! I've had to start uploading them this morning from our La Crosse Radio Group offices, where we actually DO have high speed internet access! Yay!

But my frustration is minor, compared to what this guy endured thinking that he lost his spendy little HandyCam! He set down his video recorder, only to have a seagull take off with it!! (He did manage to retrieve it!) Check out this amazing video of the little swiping seagull!

Rift Developing?

Or Just Gossip for Ratings?

So, as I've been documenting on here--I LOVE the new reality singing competition, "The Voice." I've also mentioned that while I LOVE both Blake Shelton & Adam Levine...I'm not so big of a fan of Christina Aguilera. I find her to be a spotlight whor...uh...hog. She has a hard time allowing the other coaches to be the focus...and even at times not allowing the contestants to be the focus. The latter is a bigger issue as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, the latest buzz is about a rift developing between the coaches. Partially due allegedly to the difference in pay for the coaches. According to Page Six, Christina rakes in $225,000 per episode, while the guys all get $75,000 each.

But the entertainment magazine also goes on to say that there are some serious tensions developing between the male coaches and Christina. That she refuses to talk to any of the guys when the cameras stop rolling. I don't know. Maybe she just has her "game face" on all the time? Hard to say. I just know that there are many times I wish she would just stop flapping her jaws and maybe tuck her boobies back into her shirt a little more. Sex sells though, so I suppose the producers are smitten with "cups runneth over" syndrome.

Whatever the case might be--it doesn't matter. I absolutely love the show and will be watching it again tonight. I just wish it was on an hour earlier so I wouldn't have to be so bleary-eyed tomorrow! ;)

Guest at My House

So as I was gathering up the garbage to take out to the curb last night, I spotted this critter on my driveway, near the house. Yep...a turtle! I had previously spotted a very tiny turtle in the yard while mowing the lawn a few months ago, but this one is a big honker.

Big enough to scare Bo, one of the dogs at my place. He wouldn't even come near it. (Makes me wonder if he's messed with a turtle previously and got himself bit hard.) My other dog, Casey seemed quite curious and interested in the turtle...and that worried me, as she's actually quite a hunter of mice and birds...and rabbits. I just didn't want to see her take on this turtle too. I ended up giving her a rawhide to busy herself with while I snapped some pics of the turtle and then moved him to a "safer" place out of Casey's reach.

I don't know what kind of turtle it is. I would assume just a standard breed? What do you think? Drop me an email.

Dark Horses on

Blake & Adam's Team

Having caught up on last week's "The Voice" which I taped, since I was in Nashville...and then watching last night's episode--I have to say, I think both Blake Shelton & Adam Levine have the greatest potential to pull off an upset in this reality talent competition.

Christina Aguilera has run her mouth consistently about her pool of talent on her team and while I think both Beverly & Frenchie have some serious chops--I don't think America will embrace either of them. Why? Because they're already at a high level of talent. America likes an underdog. They want to watch somebody come out of the shadows, one toe at a time and soar with the best of them. And that's exactly the potential on the teams of Adam Levine & Blake Shelton.

Don't get me wrong--I think that CeeLo Green has a few potentials on his team too--there's A LOT of buzz about that Vicci Martinez, who IS amazing. And that hairy dude Nakia is pretty dang outstanding too...but I still seem to gravitate back to Adam & Blake's team.

When I watched all four members of all four teams perform--Blake & Adam's team could survive and thrive with any of their four contestants. Christina & CeeLo both had some stinkers.

So who are the ones that I think have the potential? Definitely that Dia Frampton & Xenia on Blake's team. They have haunting voices and I'm drawn in everytime either girl begins to sing. Adam's team is brimming with potential. From Casey Weston who did the "Black Horse & the Cherry Tree" song. Javier Colon was downright ready for cutting an album...that guy is SMOOTH. And even Jeff Jenkins blew me away. He's a country guy who was a real surprise to me when he did Carrie Underwood's "Jesus Take the Wheel."

But the bottom line: I think it will come down to Dia from Blake's team and either Javier or Casey from Adam's team.

Further, I think my opinion is largely supported by the incredible hotness of both coaches--Blake and Adam. How could you NOT vote for their teams?! What do you think? Drop us an email!

I really don't get this: Most New Yorkers want Congressman Anthony Weiner to stay in office, even after a sexting scandal broke this week that revealed that the married politician had engaged in online relationships with at least six women. The new NY-1/Marist Poll finds that 51-percent of poll respondents want Weiner to stay in office while 30-percent say he should go. Do you think it's because the guy's a great congressman, or are folks in New York not bothered by the "scandal". Country Fried Fishin' Returns!!

We did our first show of the season on Friday morning...what a total hoot! Justin Pretasky from American Marine was our captain and "bait setter" as well as "fish remover" for some of the guests!

Those first guests included from June Dairy Days, Tim Degenhardt & Tamie Batzel...and from The Coulee Region Race to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Greater La Crosse--Tina Wehrs & Carissa VanderHorst. You can view pictures from the excursion HERE.

Nuggets of Interest

What a strange turn of events and nuggets that were shared on this week's "The Voice" competition! Cherie Oakley, who has been a back-up singer for many country acts auditioned on the program several weeks ago. She really wanted to be chosen by Blake Shelton to be on his team, but she picked a Miranda Lambert song and it just didn't cut it for Blake. As it turned out in the "second chance" round, Christina Aguilera picked Cherie up for her team.

Flash forward to tonight's competition. Cherie is performing against another gal by the name of Lilly. They both did a decent job on the Kelly Clarkson tune, "Since You've Been Gone." When the performance wrapped up, the coaches all took turns to critique and discuss. Blake couldn't even talk, because Reba McEntire (his assistant coach) was just bouncing up and down in her seat. As it turns out, Cherie wrote/co-wrote Reba's latest hit--"Turn on The Radio!" It was a real OMG moment, as neither Reba nor Cherie ever met prior to the show, but they knew they had a connection because of that song.

But in a sad turn of events, Cherie was not chosen. Christina went with Lilly instead of her. I'm going to guess that Christina figured that if Cherie co-wrote a #1 song...she didn't need this show? Hard to say. Both girls were really good. And at least Cherie had a "moment" on national TV, where Reba pointed her out as a writer of her latest #1 hit.

In the other country angle of the night--Curtis Grimes and Emily Valentine went head-to-head performing Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now." Apparently, the two had developed a bit of a romance, as they alluded to it coyly in the pre-performance interviews. Then at the end of their performance--they planted a HUGE KISS on one another! It was a jaw dropping moment. But what made my jaw drop further--was the their coach--Cee Lo Green chose Curtis over Emily. Totally shocked by that, as I expected him to choose Emily for her soaring vocals over the warm mellowness of Curtis. But what the heck? Another win for country!!

Best line of the night: After that kiss--Blake Shelton said, "Cee Lo wanted you to DUET...NOT DO-IT!" And then "Thank you! I'll be here all season!" Good stuff!!

Finally next week, we will get into the "live" show. I'm looking forward to this next phase of the competition. And another performance by the coaches together again!

Baby Storm...Gender Unknown

Gender unknown...on purpose. This baby was born to Kathy Witterick and David Stocker of Toronto, Canada. And they've "decided not to share Storn's sex for now--a tribute to freedom and choice in place of limitation, a stand up to what the world could become in Storm's lifetime."

Storm's mother went on to say that "in not telling the gender of my precious baby, I am saying to the world, 'Please can you just let Storm discover for him/herself what s(he) wants to be?!"

Um...really? An infant/toddler/child can grasp all of that to form an educated opinion on life and all that it involves?

Further, this family has two older boys (yes, they are indeed boys and have been fully aware of their gender since birth apparently) who are ages 5 and 2. The kids are "unschooled," a version of homeschooling, which promotes putting a child's curiosity at the center of his or her education. Which I'm not sure if that means that they will learn the alpabet or sounds well enough to communicate with others in society.

I think homeschooling is wonderful, but it doesn't sound like this type of "homeschooling" has structure or "rules" set up--how do children learn that they can't just run amok in the world, doing whatever they want all willy-nilly if they are essentially given the green light to do whatever their heart's desire...all the time? Choices are good to teach kids, but what about consequences for choices? And how heinous will it be if the consequences for these "parents" using their kids as a social experiment backfire and leave the kids floundering to function in life?

Scotty McCreery Wins!

American Idol opened up with the typical Idol cheesiness--the Top 13 dressed in white ensembles, performing Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," which ended up sounding very much like a Muzak version that one would hear in an elevator. although, it was swell to see Haley and Pia both wearing incredibly shorty-short white-wear. (Hoo-hoo alert!)

The next number featured my favorite contestant, James Durbin doing a montage of Judas Priest songs--with the band themselves. As someone who grew up listening to this stuff--I was lovin' every minute of it. It was difficult to tell who was singing, as they both sounded awesome! That was good stuff! Probably best that James Durbin didn't win...they would've forced him to record a pop album!

Jacob Lusk had the opportunity to perform next with a couple of gospel artists--including Gladys Knight. I wasn't familiar with the guy...but the song was pretty good. Gospel will definitely be the type of album that Jacob will put out when he gets off the American Idol tour. And it will be good.

As I wrote earlier in an entry, Casey Abrams sang with actor Jack Black. They did "Fat Bottom Girls" and it was comical. Casey could have a career like Jack...comedian and performer.

I'm already groaning at the prospect of having to listen to raspy-gaspy Paul sing something later.

The girls of the top 13 came out bedecked in red outfits and did a montage of tunes. And then Beyonce came out and performed with the girls as her backup.

Haley Reinhart performed with Tony Bennett. That was actually pretty cool. It was truly wonderful to see Haley wear a dress that hit mid-thigh for once.

Scotty McCreery performed "Live Like You Were Dying" with Tim McGraw!!! Tim's been in a legal battle with his record label--Curb, over breach of contract. They sued him for giving them his new material for his final album "Emotional Traffic" under his contract "too close" to the date of his previous album. Stating that it was not going to be topical or relevant when it came out. Bananas, right? Tim wants out of Curb now that he's fulfilled his contract and they're none too happy. But anyway--Tim was awesome...Scotty did a respectable job. I enjoyed how they dressed Scotty in black leather, like Tim does so often. It was a nice change up from Scotty's normal flannel gear.

OMG! Jennifer Lopez is a hoochie! She came out salsa dancing in a shredded bathrobe around her hubby, Marc Anthony who performed. She shook her hiney right in the camera!

The guys from the top 13 came out all decked out in black to sing a montage of songs...some pretty painful to listen to...before they brought out Tom Jones to sing.

Lady Gaga performed. I always have flashblacks of Madonna in the 80's when she performs. It amuses me when kids carry on about how innovative she is...when it's essentially a rehashing of Madonna.

Lauren Alaina got to do "Before He Cheats" with Carrie Underwood. They harmonized real nicely together. It was a very good performance!

Rock band U2's lead singer, Bono and guitarist, The Edge performed a number from the Spiderman Broadway production. Then Spiderman dropped down from the ceiling in front of Jennifer Lopez, just like in the movie...she declined to kiss him. Funny!

Before they announced the winner of this year's competition...Steven Tyler took to the piano and sang "Dream On." Sweet!

And...they went over the two-hour mark AGAIN...so anyone who DVR'd the show was once again screwed. They do this every year, so I knew it was going to happen and was caught up by the last segment, so I watched it live and didn't miss when they announced SCOTTY as the winner. Very genuine guy. Don't know if he'll be as big as Carrie Underwood after winning the show, but I guess we'll see. What do you think? Drop us an email.

Tornado Season

Wreaking Havoc

I watched the TV late in the afternoon as live footage of the tornado outbreaks in Oklahoma were going on. I could NOT believe the amazing (albeit frightening) footage the storm chasers were getting. And wondered if I would be able to have nerves of steel to do something like that.

I grew up in northern Illinois...in "Tornado Alley"... in a trailer. Yep, I'm white trash and I can remember being little and everyone scrambling to go to a neighbor's place who had a basement so we would be safe when a tornado was headed toward our little town. I was too young to fully understand the fear. And as it turned out, the tornado thankfully swept around us.

Parents likely feel that fear ten-fold because they worry for their kids intensely before fearing for themselves. I hope that families are able to hold it all together in these tough times--enduring this barrage of storms that have been pummeling the Midwest. I was grateful to hear that the tornado watch for Joplin, MO was mercifully canceled for that community overnight. I don't know if they could've contended with another direct hit so soon.

I even pondered if newlyweds, Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert were safe, as they live near Oklahoma City in a little town called Tishomingo. The storms tracked right through there. Miranda's in Nashville recording for a new album according to her tweets on Twitter. And Blake is likely with her, because neither one of them were tweeting about any kind of damage or even about the storms right away.

We are SO lucky that the damage from the tornadoes in our area was not as severe. Still... families are trying to regroup and rebuild. It's not too late to volunteer to help with the clean up. The Voice Rolls On

Very entertaining...keeps me glued more so than American Idol...that's for sure. But then again--Blake Shelton will always be a draw for me. It's golden when he and Reba (his assistant "coach") work together...they joke around and it's priceless.

It was a strange pairing and song for that matter, that Blake set up for his two contestants this week. I think Blake was having second thoughts too on the whole set up, based upon his face during their performance..."You Can't Hurry Love." Awkward was probably the best word for it.

The Sarah chick was more showy, but Blake chose Dia. I think he made the right choice, because Sarah's voice sounded like any other Diva-wanna-be. Dia had some unique tone to her voice and will probably be a surprise as the contest goes on.

There were a three other pairings for the other coaches--Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green & Adam Levine...but I'm not going to go into great detail on them. Other than to say that Adam Levine had the best pairing and performance of the night with his two contestants doing "Creep" by Radiohead. He had one helluva time picking who to keep in the game...and ultimately, I think he made the right choice in Devon. I think that kid has something special in his voice.

Suffice it to say, the show is still drama packed because it's "sudden death" performing. One more week of eliminations before it gets REALLY interesting...and I can't wait for it to pick up the pace!! What do you think? Email us!

American Idol

Gone Country

Diggin' this country match-up for the finale on American Idol--Scotty McCreery vs. Lauren Alaina. Both sang three songs each on the show...one of their choosing...one chosen for them by a country superstar...George Strait for Scotty & Carrie Underwood for Lauren. And the final song is to be the first single released by which ever contestant wins.

Apparently, Lauren Alaina popped a vocal chord and has been treated for that. Somehow I think they're going to need the doctor A LOT on the American Idol tour this year with so many of the girls screaming instead of singing...but I digress.

Scotty was up first after the coin toss and he chose to sing the Montgomery-Gentry song "Gone" again and did an alright job on it. I was slightly disturbed by the crotch-shot camera on him...but after a quick toss of salt into my eyes, I'm good.

Lauren chose to sing Carrie Underwood's "Flat on the Floor" and did pretty good on it as well. She was very sparkly in her silver-tin foil ensemble. It was a solid distraction from her ample back end and it was actually quite flattering on her...for tin foil.

George Strait chose his hit, "Check Yes or No" for Scotty to sing. Kind of bummed they didn't have George on the show. That would've been cool. The performance was OK...Scotty injected his over-the-top drawl into it and I hate that, so I wasn't as thrilled with his rendition. Just sounded kind of like karaoke night at a local watering hole to me.

Carrie Underwood picked Pam Tillis' hit, "Maybe It Was Memphis" for Lauren to sing. The dress she wore looked like she was ready to go square dancing. I mean it was sparkly, so I guess that made it more special than your standard square dancing dress...and it did hide her big badonkadonk. She gave it a big glory note finish. Again, it was good. Not "blow me away" good, but good nonetheless--especially considering she was having vocal chord issues.

At this point, I can't tell if I'm just jaded and bored because Pia Toscano and James Durbin were eliminated earlier. Scotty and Lauren are good...but I'm not feeling "wowed" at this point.

Fortunately, the final songs are written for American Idol, which means they have room for vocal runs and glory notes galore...but before we can hear them...we are treated to a performance by Tyo Cruise...which I promptly fast-forwarded through...thank you DVR...

Scotty pulled back on his drawl in the song "I Love You This Big"...and that alone helped me like it. Would've liked to hear more of his low notes worked into it, as that's his "money" area, but it was still OK. I was surprised to hear him hit a higher note at the end. It was unexpected, but I think I would've rather heard a Scottified American Idol "glory note" that went LOW. Wouldn't that have been interesting?

Lauren seemed to pull me in more than Scotty with her song, "Like My Mother Does." The tune was referencing her Mom and I loved that she went out into the crowd and hugged her Mom during the performance. I think that might help secure some extra votes for her. Her Mom and she both looked incredibly emotional afterward. I really liked this performance. It seemed more believable than Scotty's.

I'm thinking Lauren will win it all tomorrow night.

And I'm looking forward to what sounds like a highly entertaining finale program. Sources indicate that Casey Abrams is supposed to sing with Jack Black. That ought to be good. Rock band U2's frontman, Bono and guitarist The Edge are supposed to do a song on the finale. And I've heard that Steven Tyler is going to perform with Carrie Underwood, Lady Gaga & Beyonce...as well as with Scotty & Lauren on one big @ss number! Wouldn't that be something if the results show was more entertaining than the actual contest performances this week?! Oh wait...that's happened a lot.

Syrupy Show Addiction

OK...I'll be the first to admit, the show "The Bachelorette" is equally as sham-o-rific as it's original counterpart, "The Bachelor," but I found myself watching it last night--midway through and ended up watching until the end...just to see what happened. Yes, I got sucked in to the silly show.

The only reason I even proceeded to watch it, as I was flipping around the dial...was because of "Tim." Yes, I blame the drunkard, Tim. He was sloppy-fall-down-drunk on the show! I thought--now THIS is a trainwreck I MUST watch. So watch, I did. Tim, a wine & liquor salesman (LOL!) was stumbling and bumbling his way through a one-on-one chat with the beautiful bachelorette, Ashley Herbert.

The classic moment was when Tim told the other clown, who was wearing a mask (albeit a bit kitschy in my opinion, but whatever) that HE was making an @ss out of himself by wearing the mask. Really? And being fall-down-slurring drunk on a nationally broadcast TV show is NOT making an @ss out of yourself? (LOL x 2!)

Needless to say, after Tim eventually passed out cold...snoring on one of the sofas--Ashley had a few of the guys load him up into a car to send him packing. AMUSING!

The part of the show where I couldn't control my laughter was the post-comments from the men who were not given a rose from Ashley and thus "out of contention" for her "love." One of them actually cried! Seriously?? You meet this woman once and you're THAT broken up over this "failed relationship?" I mean I get that Ashley was on the show previously--and he may have had some inkling into her psyche, but still...CRYING over not being picked to continue on in a "reality love show?!" The guy is an idiot.

Will I watch the show again? Meh...probably not. Unless there are more guys that will embarrass themselves for my entertainment...and that being said...I'm sure there will be!

Schwarzenegger is a Slug

I've heard the rumors about Arnold Schwarzenegger's womanizing ways for years, but just chalked it up to Hollywood Ballyhoo. True or not--I just figured it's the state of the state of California...and Hollywood in particular. However, that doesn't make it right. And with the recent allegations of illegitimate children that Arnold has created--and there are oodles of them...I am increasingly appalled by this jerk.

There's an unauthorized biography that came out in the 1990's, written by Wendy Leigh. She had a plethora of proof about Arnold's infidelities, yet no one seemed to take notice. In part, it's believed that because he was married to Maria Shriver (a niece to John F. Kennedy) he was privy to the media protection that seems to surround any member of the Kennedy clan when it comes to scandal. It's all just so heinous.

Not only do I feel bad for Maria Shriver...but I feel really bad for all of the children--his two eldest kids, Patrick and Katherine have dropped the "Schwarzenegger" name and have adopted their mother's name, "Shriver" now as their surnames. I REALLY feel for Arnold's illegitimate children. And apparently, there are A LOT of them. I can only imagine what that must feel like to be brought into this world by a guy who lacks respect for women--their mothers particularly. I've seen some pictures of the housekeeper's son, who is now 13. He is the spitting image of Arnold. This boy was born just a week apart from Arnold's fourth child with Maria.

Arnold is a tremendous pig. He's never been a great actor, so I can only hope that people eventually stop paying attention to this guy and he has to resort to doing cheesy infomercials for income.

Sara Evans To Perform On "Dancing With The Stars" Finale

Sara Evans is returning to "Dancing With the Stars," but not to compete. The country singer is among the guests who'll perform on tonight's 12th season finale. She'll turn in a rendition of her latest chart-topping hit "A Little Bit Stronger" on the show.

The show, airing on ABC at 8pm (our time), will also feature performances from the Black Eyed Peas and The Go-Go's. Evans says she's "honored and excited" about going back to the "Dancing" stage.

Sara previously appeared on the show as a contender, teaming with professional dancer Tony Dovolani in the fall of 2006. But during her time on the show her marriage to now ex-husband Craig Schelslek was falling apart, and Sara dropped out midway through the competition to focus on her family and file for divorce.

Mirrorball Trophy Still Up For Grabs

Now, it truly is all about the viewers at home. Following Monday's "Dancing With The Stars" on ABC, Hines Ward and Chelsea Kane are dead even on the leader board.

Trailing is Kirstie Alley, but the 60-year-old actress is also a fan favorite who's often exceeded the judges' expectations. Following her barefooted Freestyle, Judge Bruno Tonioli raved over Kirstie's progress on the show.

Ward and Kane, meanwhile, each achieved near perfection for their two dances on Monday. Ward dazzled with a Quickstep and a NFL halftime show-inspired Freestyle with partner Kym Johnson. Kane performed solidly during a Samba. Later, the Disney actress didn't let the loss of studio lights during her Freestyle with partner Mark Ballas throw her off her game. Both competitors scored 59 out of a possible 60 points for their performances.

So, who will get that mirrorball trophy? I personally think Chelsea is the best dancer, but figuring in the fan voting it's seriously anyone's to win tonight!

John Rich is the

Celebrity Apprentice

It was a battle royal on Donald Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice" for the finale. Marlee Matlin vs. John Rich. Both did a phenomenal job with the final marketing challenge for soft drink 7-Up, and in the end, it was John Rich who "The Donald" chose as the winner. John picked up a quarter of a million dollars for his charity--St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

I think part of the reason that Donald Trump didn't chose Marlee was that she continually remarked that her disability of being deaf has caused a lot of people to put roadblocks up for her and she has consistently broken through those roadblocks. While that's admirable and certainly noteworthy, Marlee seemed to be playing that card a little too hard--almost in what I perceived an effort to garner the final vote BECAUSE of her disability. I think that ultimately worked against her.

Kudos to John Rich. He played the game like his guitar...smooth and with gusto. Plus, he got Donald Trump to put on a black cowboy hat. That scores points in my book too!
